On a cold river pier, a source calling himself Nabil gives Ida an unmarked USB containing drafts, terminology protocols, tracked changes, talking points, and clean-copy requests. The files reveal a system that does not need to erase facts if it can soften the language around them: killed becomes died, responsibility becomes concern, and urgent violence becomes terminology safe enough to delay. Ida and her team follow the edits through survivors, diplomats, doctors, lawyers, editors, and institutions while her own multiple sclerosis makes time increasingly precious.
